Do you ever feel like your talking and talking and no one is
hearing the words come out of your mouth? I think this is a fairly common
problem among parents out there.
This story happened a few weeks before Christmas. Not only
does Christmas fall near the end of Birthday season but we have several loving
family members that are generous enough to want to spoil our family at
Christmas. Finding the right gifts to make suggestions in the correct price
range can be a little bit of a challenge. One year I wasn’t quite prepared
enough, and one child, who will remain nameless and was obviously lacking in
the proper amount of sleep, opened every gift with “I didn’t want this” and
then throwing the gift at the gift giver. As it was enough fun to experience
exactly once, we’ve tried hard to not repeat it.
In our quest to find all the right gifts we spend most of
Birthday season watching commercials on purpose to find that one thing we already bought that we might need to convince someone is the perfect gift. Or asking, and asking, and asking "Are you sure you want (fill in the blank)?" just to make sure no one changes their mind at the last minute.
This years very sneaky asking led to this conversation
Dad - Do you kids even like Furbies?
K - What's a Furbie?
5 minutes of explanation from all other members of the family about what a Furbie is.
K - Oh you mean a Furbie?
See a Furbie had been circled in every toy book this little girl saw. We spent several weeks trying to decide if she'd circled things she actually wanted or just anything yellow in the toy book. Grandma searched and searched to find said toy at a decent price. Little girl opened it, was overjoyed and then turned it on. Now it spends most of its time in the dark in my closet because no one can figure out how to turn it off. At least we tried right?
